Top Mexican Official Lost In Crash
A tragedy has befallen the Mexican government when it's top Cabinet secretary
, Francisco Blake Mora died in a helicopter pilot with eight other people.
The presidential spokesperson, Alejandra Sota announced that government authorities have been able to recover the bodies of the secretary, the helicopter's pilot and seven other individuals who perished in the crash. Among the fatalities was Interior Undersecretary Felipe Zamora.
The renowned secretary was in the copter on their way to a prosecutor's meeting in Morelos state when the helicopter crashed in southern Mexico City. Investigators were still determining the cause for the crash.
Blake Mora held the position of Secretary of the Interior, the top cabinet post and was managing internal political affairs as well as national security. This office made him a key participant in the battle against drug cartels and negotiations with opposition political parties for a unified government. He assumed the office in 2010 for current President Felipe Calderon.
Blake Mora started his political career as government official in his hometown of Tijuana and then was elected to the federal congress in 2000. Upon his assumption of office as Interior Secretary, he led the government's activities against organized crime. This made him travel to the most troubled spots in Mexico to meet and assist state and local security officials that have been subjected to reprisals and attacks from drug cartels.
On the political front, Blake Mora personified the get-tough stance of the Calderon government against drug traffickers and the gangs that operate them. He made public pledges of bringing the fight to the traffickers instead of allowing them to continue their heinous reign in the Mexican countryside.
He was also the chief disaster relief manager for the government, as he led government efforts to assist the flood stricken area of San Martin Texmelucan in 2010. He also conducted the relief operations and assistance to the victims of the oil pipeline explosion that occurred in the same area.
Through his efforts, he created a new national identity card for individuals under eighteen years of age that featured digitalized fingerprints and iris imaging to prevent criminals from using forged and false ID cards.
Blake Mora was born in Tijuana and studied to complete his law degree from the Universidad Autonoma de Baja California. He also obtained a diploma in strategic planning and public policy from the Autonomous Technological Institute of Mexico. He was headed for the possible presidential candidacy but his efforts would fall short because of his untimely death.
