Top Selling Cars Of 2012

The early part of 2012 saw an interesting trend in Ontario car sales

, specifically relating to the brands of cars sold.

Japanese brands took five of the 10 spots on the list. This is noteworthy given (a) the apparent disinterest in the tremendous strides the Big Three have taken to improve upon quality, style and performance; and (b) the resilience of the Japanese car manufacturers to bounce back from the tsunami that devastated their country less than a year before.

Hyundai is a surprise; not their presence on the list, but the fact that they had two spots. Their Elantra came in at #2, a clear indication of the Korean companys place among the Japanese giants Honda, Toyota and Nissan in the sedan market. At #8 however, was the Hyundai Accent, a smaller ride that skews younger and more urban. Hyundai is cool and getting cooler; but last years numbers saw the Sonata crack the top 10; this year its nowhere to be found.

Theres one European car on the list, and of course its a Volkswagen but maybe not the one youd think. A lot of people would lean towards the Rabbit as the most sought-after VW; but its the Jetta, in fact, that rules the autobahn in Ontario. This tells you that people who are willing to spend more to get a Volkswagen will, by and large, spend even more to get a better vehicle. And with the performance numbers and joy-of-driving you can get from a Jetta, who can blame them?

Two of the Big Three are represented on the list: the Chevy Cruze at #5 and the Ford Focus at #7. Its fascinating to note that Ford was the only American manufacturer to not take bailout dollars, and yet theyre being surpassed by one that did. Chrysler didnt make the top 10, even after a complete brand overhaul in 2011.

Light truck sales, however, is a completely different story.

The top seven entries are all American made, with representation by all three of the manufacturers. The Ford F Series tops the list, but thats to be expected given their history and pedigree. The next two, however, are Dodge vehicles from Chrysler; the very same Chrysler that was nowhere to be found in the Top 10 Selling Cars list.

Another observation from the light truck list is that 40% of the vehicles are pick-up trucks, compared to 60% that are SUVs and that two of the four pick-ups rank 1 and 2 on the list. This is interesting given how many more SUV customers one would think thered be compared to pick-up truck customers; especially given the price points of some of the SUVs like the Hyundai Santa Fe (#10) and the Dodge Journey (#7).

Its important to keep in mind that the list in question is not a complete 2012 story. In fact, its representative of only a very small part of the year. Its entirely conceivable that the list will look radically different by December. On the other hand, it could just as easily be identical, save for units sold.
