Top Six Tips for Making that Fall Picnic Perfect
Welcome to Fall! There's a little nip to the aira new crispness to the sun-filled days of autumn leaves coloring the mountains and valleys. It's the perfect time to get outside with the family enjoying the crunch of newly fallen leaves under foot as you hike and enjoy the afternoon days. This is the time of year to enjoy being outside with your family and friends and picnicking, of course, is at the top of our outdoor list of ways to enjoy that time together.
Packing the essentials for the Fall picnic is of utmost importance when the days are a little shorter. A little pre-planning can be a time-saver as well as make the day more enjoyable for everyone involved. Here are the top 6 tips you need to make that seasonal picnic simply perfect.
Pack seasonal items from the local market. This time of year, pumpkins, squash, greens, apples are in abundance. They are hearty foods that are easily used in recipes, on sandwiches, or in soups.
Make sure you have ample space in your picnic basket for hot items and cold items. It's nice on a crisp Fall day to enjoy a cup of spiced cider from the thermos or the much loved (especially by kids) hot chocolate. But you'll be packing cold items as well in your basket. Picnic baskets and coolers with dual compartments for keeping hot food hot and cold food cold are optimal. If wine is on the agenda, look for baskets that have wine compartments. These make it easy to transport and are virtually spill-proof.
Many of today's baskets come with cutlery, plates and cloth napkins. If your basket doesn't contain these items, look for compostable picnic plates and cups, recycled tableware, and if you don't have cloth napkins, look for the recycled, unbleached paper napkins. You could also throw in an organic cotton table cloth that can be used on park picnic tables or on the ground in a pinch if you find yourself without a proper picnic blanket. Being green, recycling, reusing is a great way to care for your family and the planet so including it in your picnic outings, wherever possible, makes everyone feel like they are doing their part.
That picnic blanket is of utmost importance and having the proper blanket on hand is essential. In the Fall of the year when sunshine filled days are often chilly, a blanket to use as a throw adds a touch of warmth and a blanket with a water-proof backing is a must for picnicking on the ground. The water-proof backing keeps everyone dry and also serves as a barrier against the cold ground. Our recommendation is to pack both!
As always, packing condiments and moist towelettes or hand wipes for quick cleanup (especially handy for picnicking with kids) are a must on any picnic.
Finally, throwing in an extra hat, jacket and maybe even gloves, depending on where you are picnicking, is a good idea. Dressing in layers that can be easily removed or added back when the air gets chilly is important for this time of year.
