Top Spanish Dishes For Some Late Night Nosh

Home to some of the best cuisine in the world

, Spain has lots to choose from in terms of food. We've rounded up a list of some of the best late night eats to try while you're there, and there's no tapas on this list.

Bocadillos are the Spanish version of the good old ham (or chorizo) and cheese sandwich and are often chosen by the locals for a light, late night bite. Sometimes you may even find one containing omelette, or Spanish potato, inside a length of French bread. They are never buttered as the contents are often greasy enough.

Vegetarians should ask for a bocadillo de queso bread with what will most likely be thick slices of manchego cheese or bocadillo vegetal, which will be prepared without the meat (and mayonnaise if you are vegan).

Other typical sandwiches include montaditos which are smaller versions of bocadillos, a sandwich mixto which is usually a toasted ham and cheese sandwich, and tostas, a kind of substantial canap on thick, toasted bread.

Sometimes you may fancy tucking into something more familiar after a night out, and in all major tourist resorts in Spain youll find a good offering of quick bites and fast-food dishes, including pizzas, kebabs and falafel stands. Youre also bound to stumble upon the odd European fast-food chain restaurant or two.

Pizza is loved all over the world, and also embraced in Spain. However, you wont find deep pan or stuffed crust versions here; instead, and as in Italy, your pizza will be served thin crust and not heavy on the toppings. Popular variants include ham and cheese, pork, chorizo sausage, and Serrano ham, all topped of course with juicy black olives.

Have a craving for a kebab? Then hunt down a bar serving Pinchitos Morunos, which are very popular and consist of skewers of spicy meat, usually pork rather than lamb. As well as being really easy to cook, youll also sometimes find them being sold on the streets of Spanish cities and tempting the fans at football matches.

And instead of opting for chips, why not try the hugely popular Spanish alternative, patatas bravas, instead? Normally served as a tapas dish but often found served as an alternative to chips or fries, these chunky sauted white potatoes fried in oil are slathered with a spicy tomato sauce and sometimes garlic mayonnaise, and are totally addictive.

Another Spanish fast-food option is falafel. To get one, head for a Turkish inspired Doner kebab restaurant which are often easy to find. Falafel sandwiches or falafel served with salad and rice, is the ideal cheap, late night vegetarian option.

But for Spains version of a fast food restaurant, head for Cerveceria 100 Montaditos, which has locations dotted all over the country. However if youre looking for a burger or some fried chicken you may want to look elsewhere , as 100 Montaditos combines fast food, a deli and a bar and prices are very reasonable. Food typically includes anything from French fries and nachos, to salads and montaditos bite sized sandwiches with delicious fillings.
