Top Ten Places to Eat in Cannes and St. Tropez
Although world-renowned for its pristine beaches and glorious light, the south of France is also a gastronomical paradise, with some of the finest dining to be had in Cannes and St. Tropez. While the following is hardly a comprehensive list, some dining experiences you do not want to miss include:
Cannes
Les Pecheurs - Located in Cap d'Antibes between Nice and Cannes, diners have spectacular views on the oceanside peninsula. There are actually two dining choices, Restaurant de la Plage and the Michelin-starred Les Pecheurs. Whether you choose Mediterranean flavours to savour through long sunny afternoons or more formal, white-glove dining with Provencal specialties, the food is superb and the service equally so.
Z-Plage - Located on the largest private beach in the South of France this designer lounge / restaurant on La Croisette presents a healthy menu throughout the day with tropical-themed drinks, fresh spring salads, and lovely fruit combos. Toward evening look for fish and meat prepared in a clay oven to preserve the succulent flavours. Wonderful example of Cannes beach luxury.
Les Moulin de Mougins - A two-star Michelin restaurant with an adjacent culinary school, the menu features appetiser arrangements, fresh local seafood, and hearty Provencal meats served with summer vegetables. The rack of lab simmered in olive oil and presented with grilled eggplant is a particularly delicious example of the genre.
Le Palme d'Or - This sophisticated restaurant is a favourite with stars during the Cannes Film Festival. Beautiful Art Deco decor with enclosed terraces offering spectacular sea views. The modern French menu changes with the seasons and is heavy on local products. Reservations are a must in this popular venue.
Ct Jardin - Just minutes off La Croisette, here you'll get generous portions at excellent prices. Dine in either the street level veranda, the garden terrace surrounded by flowering plants, or the cosy dining room upstairs. Perfect for romantic intimate dinners. The cuisine is French Provencal and there's a healthy local clientele, always a strong recommendation.
St. Tropez
St. Joseph - A celebrity eatery on the ground floor of an apartment building near the port, expect local atmosphere, views of the town, and premier people watching from the patio. The sophisticated French cuisine has been simplified for minimalist presentation. Don't miss the seafood sampler or the pasta specialties.
La Tour - Located at the end of the port in a picturesque setting, arrive at sunset or late to arrive the dinner rush at 9 p.m. A fairly traditional eatery, the emphasis here is on fresh-caught seafood. There is an evening lounge scene, but this is not a full-blown club and the food is excellent. Avoid the daily specials, which tend to be sauce heavy.
La Villa Romana - With gaudy gold-leaf furniture and a raucous atmosphere, this is pure, old-school Italian. An elite meeting spot for two decades, the delicious food is not diet conscious. Expect a somewhat older crowd, but not quiet dining. The pasta is homemade, the seafood sauces are this side of heaven -- the Italian truffles are heaven.
Colette - Located in the St. Tropez highlands toward Salins Beach this modern resort features the work of 3-Star Michelin chef Pierre Gagnaire. Simple Mediterranean dishes with a beach aesthete are perfect poolside or in the evening. Refined, but not fussy, the menu is anchored by seasonal produce and the local catch. A lovely change of atmosphere from the bustling town.
Les Palmiers - One of the hottest but least exploited clubs on Pampelonne Beach, you'll get tanning beds, club restaurant seating, and a mainly local, French crowd. This is classic seaside cuisine in the best tradition of Provence. Mixed seafood appetisers and hearty beef and chicken main courses are balanced with grilled fish and signature pasta dishes.
