Top Ten Reasons to Take the High Road

You've come to the place where you have to decide whether to take the high road or not. It may come in a meeting where one member of the group loses his tempter and hurls insults your way, it might be a competitor spreading lies about your company or it could be a former employee telling untruths about you or your company. You can decide to get down in the gutter with the other person or you can take the high road. Taking the high road does not mean doing nothing, it means doing whatever you do with grace and dignity. You can and should set the record straight about lies and insults, but do so in a manner that will make you stand apart from the one attacking you.

I remember being in a meeting once with a client who was a real hothead. He was asking for unreasonable things from us and he knew it, but he had worked himself into such a frenzy that he just had to let go with some obscenities and insults. When he was done, I just sat there and looked at my notes for about a minute. After a minute, he had said nothing more and I just resumed my conversation where I had left off. The meeting continued and concluded successfully. If I had taken his bait and gotten into an argument with him, we would have spent substantial time just yelling at each other while accomplishing nothing. My silence just let his obscenities just hang in the room like a rancid odor. It was embarrassing and uncomfortable for him.

I have found it always works best to take the high road and tell all of my associates to do the same. It is an important part of the integrity we all want to have for ourselves and our company.

In thinking about this the other day, I jotted down ten reasons for taking the high road. Let me know what you think and if you disagree or have some more reasons to add to my list.

9. People will want to do business with you. (The kind of people you want to do business with).

10. People will trust you with more responsibility and business.
