Top Tips On Avoiding Pirates

Unlike the traditional pirate stories of Captain Hook and Long John Silver

, modern day pirates don't walk around with patches whilst brandishing a hook. Knowing what to look out for, and where, can make sure that you are not putting yourself and your crew in danger.

Modern day pirates are, however, just as ruthless and are out to loot and ransom. One of the more disturbing facts about pirates is that they still take hostages for ransoms. Often they are out to take your personal belongings. Many pirates are poor and are looking to steal a boats goods such as electronic items, money, cargo and any personal belongings they can find. But sadly they will often take crew and passengers in order to get a ransom, be it from a family or a government.

Piracy is not all that distanced from terrorism. Often pirates will have had specific training, such as military, and are part of anti-government groups which target certain waters . Pirates are ruthless with one aim, to get what they want.

Sadly pirate attacks are on the increase. The beginning of 2011 saw a rise of 36% in pirate attacks compared to that of a year ago. The main culprits are the Somali pirates who operate in the Arabian Seas.

So how can you avoid a pirate attack?

Some waterways in the world are simply teaming with pirates. The main piece of advice would be to avoid these areas all together.

Indonesia is the worst affected area, especially the Malacca Straights from Malaysia to the island of Sumatra. Other heavily targeted areas are India, the Red Sea, Cuba, Iraq, east coast of Africa and Nigeria. Often places where the main world trade cargo passes are the biggest targets.

If you must travel in these specific areas here are some tips on how to avoid a pirate attack;

Plan your route carefully so you know all the 'no-go' areas. Once you reach port make sure you don't leave anyone on board without you knowing. Aim to travel through these areas with other boats. Safety in numbers. Keep in direct communication with warships. If there are any warships in the area they could really help you should a pirate attack arise. Keep your wits about you. Common sense is vital. Travel at maximum speed through these areas. Don't anchor in these waters. Continue to a safe area. Put out a radio call instantly if you feel you are under attack. Keep weapons in a safe area and keep valuables locked up in a safe. If you are boarded give the pirates what they want straight away. Don't put up a fight.

All ships are now called to be armed as even cruise ships have become potential pirate targets. If you are under attack from pirates then quick thinking and remaining calm will serve you well.

Reporting any potential threat or suspicious behaviour straight away could save you and your boat. Using your common sense and being well researched could also help you to avoid any unnecessary encounters with modern day pirates.
