When delivering the annual Christmas party safety and legal issues are always a worry

. For many bosses, it becomes so much of a worry they cancel the party, which can devastating to the members of staff. It can be avoided by careful preparation beforehand, so as to avoid accidents.

Not every bad situation can be avoided at a Christmas party; however, you can limit the chances of any accidents occurring by following a few safety tips.

One of the main causes of Christmas parties going wrong in the office is not sticking to health and safety when decorating. Beforehand remind yourself of health and safety policies in the office and remind your staff too. When decorating the office, always use a stepladder and never place decorations on electrical items nor emergency exits.

If you decide upon decorating the office with lights or a Christmas tree, check beforehand that the lights are working correctly, place near a cooler area of the office and dont forget to turn off and unplug before you leave. Any damage caused by electrical equipment that has not been tested recently (for the office) means you cant make a claim for any damage done by it. If a Christmas tree has been added make sure it is sturdy and is out of the way, so that no one accidently knocks it over.

Food can also be another point of disaster. Always prepare the food according to instructions and keep in the fridge up until the event if necessary. Try to buy the food not long before, as you dont want to risk the food being out of date and giving all your members of staff food poisoning. It is generally recommended that you avoid egg based food, which can easily go off and stick to foods that last a little longer.

Spillages are another cause of accidents and office damage. Give your staff plastic cups, instead of glass, so there is no danger of glass on the floor. Place computers out of the way, as even a small spillage could be lethal. Lastly, like normal office rules there should be no smoking or candles as these are a fire hazard.

At Christmas parties always make sure you have a trained member of staff present who can deal with minor injuries. If anyone then does have a minor accident, it can then be treated straight away. Make sure you have a full First Aid kit, which has everything needed to treat any small injury.

Its vital for you and your staffs safety that if you do organise a Christmas party that you follow health and safety guidelines, as failing to do so could not only spoil your enjoyment of the party but could endanger your business.
