Shop around

Many people take the easy way out and use their existing phone line provider. Though this may be convenient, shopping around may find you a better deal. For example, if you have a pay monthly mobile phone contract check if your network provider offers you an existing customer discount with broadband sign-up.

Check the broadband speed

First, think of what you use your broadband for. If you only require internet for simple email access and surfing the net, you won't need more than 8Mb download speed. However, if you've got several members in your household who are heavy internet users, using VoIP applications like Skype, streaming videos and music and gaming online, be sure to select a higher speed some providers go up to 24MB. A higher speed will cost more but be sure to choose one appropriate to your needs.

Is there a download limit?

Some broadband suppliers will limit the amount you can download each month whilst others will let you have "unlimited" capacity. As with the broadband speed, make sure you choose a package that has a "cap" suitable to your internet use. However, even if you believe your package allows you an unlimited number of downloads, most will still have a fair usage cap for heavy data users on the network. If you suspect you'll be downloading large quantities of data, make sure you check the fair usage limit.

Lots of suppliers bundle phone calls with their home broadband packages, often offering option of weekend only or round-the-clock calls this can be particularly good if you're a business user. Providers such as Sky and Virgin will also include digital TV with their telephone and broadband, so if you're in need of all three you could make some savings.

Contract length

The majority of contracts in broadband are 12 months, 18 months and sometimes even 24 months. If you intend to leave before your contract is completed do check the conditions as you may need to pay the full amount until the end of the term. If you only require internet in the short term you could investigate mobile broadband which would allow you internet access on a monthly basis with a "dongle" (USB modem).
