One thing to always remember when designing a website (or anything really) is to be consistent. Make sure that each hyperlink is correct and it leads to the page it states it is for. Also, be careful with colours, fonts, text size, etc. For a professional looking website, avoid using different colours, fonts and text sizes when it isn't necessary to do so. Choose your colours, font and text size and ensure they are consistent throughout.

Good organisation is essential when creating a website. Put your self in the position of your website visitors. Something that may make sense to you, or something you may think is easy to find may act as the opposite to your visitors. A good way to avoid this is to have your friends check your website before you make it accessible to the public.

When thinking about the colour scheme of your website, use colours that are readable. By this, I mean do not use light text on a light background, or dark text on a dark background. This can cause headaches and may even cause people to leave your website which is not what you want! It has been proven that the easiest colours to read for most people are black text on a white background.

If you are struggling for ideas for your website, it is a good idea to look at other websites for inspiration (but do not copy!) If you are considering including something on your website that you are unsure of, look at some popular websites and see if they have it on theirs. For example a photo background. The fact no major websites use this feature suggests that it is probably not a good idea!

The content of your website is VERY important. After all, if you visited a website and it was full of irrelevant content, how many seconds would it be before you left that website? Make sure all of your content is relevant. For example, if your website is about music, you wouldn't have a page about cats!

Before making your website available, proof read all of the text and check all of the pages are complete, all of the links work and it is consistent throughout. To be extra safe, ask a couple of friends to test it for you too, as an outside perspective is better for spotting flaws that you may not have noticed whilst working on your website.

Never ever put music or videos on your page that start to play automatically. It can be annoying to visitors and in some situations, for example if someone is visiting your website when they shouldn't whilst they are at work, it could even get them into trouble with the boss!

Always consider your visitors when making your website. You may use Firefox and great, if your website works on this browser. What if someone using a different browser wants to visit your website but can't because it will not work in the browser they are using? Always consider the fact that your visitors may not be using the same technology as you.
