Top Tips to Help You Avoid Turning on the A.C
It's now that muggy time of year again, where we wake up in the morning stuck to our bed. Each summer, I challenge myself to save more money and use less energy to stay cool in the house. I've found there's plenty that can be done quickly and cheaply to make summer more bearable. Here are some dirt-cheap suggestions to reduce your home temperature and your costs.
Tips that cost absolutely nothing to implement:
There's several things you can do that cost virtually nothing that will make a significant difference in your home temperature. Always have your shades closed during the day to keep the sunlight out, and open the windows at night to let in the slightly cooler air.
Another good free tip to pair with this involves your ceiling fans. Ensure that they are rotating counter-clockwise to circulate cool air. Until recently I had not known about this, and now it makes quite a noticeable difference.
For Just a Few Bucks, You Can...
Change out the incandescent bulbs. Ever notice how they get super hots I hope they're compact fluorescent by now...quite a difference in heat. With all the hype, I'm sure you've changed these out by now anyway...so how about your own cheap A.C. units
Freeze a big bottle of water and place it in front of your fan for some cool air. At night, I turn on my window fan and place a frozen bottle in front of it...it actually works pretty nice. Just like in the wintertime, caulking cracks serves the same function. Keeping in that colder air is pretty darn valuable. Hold a burning incense stick around your walls and watch if the smoke is a straight line or if it gets out of control...a great technique to find air leaks you didn't know about.
Have the Summer Heat Work For You.
Air-dry your clothes vs. throwing them in the dryer. I hang them on my deck to keep the humidity out, plus the sunlight will dry them faster. Have a grills Cook outside instead of using the oven or stove. Having a smoldering-hot kitchen after cooking a meal is the worst in the summertime.
Laptop or desktops Laptops use a considerably less amount of energy and put off much less heat than their clunky counterparts. And of course, turn it off when you're going to bed. And I don't want to hear anything about it using more energy turning it on and off more...this applied to computers from ages ago, modern designs are well-equipped for this.
The tips I just revealed have a grand price tag of virtually nothing, and will begin to show their worth immediately. Don't miss out on these tricks, they can be the difference between throwing money out the window on air conditioning versus forgetting you had A.C. to begin with.
Remember, there's plenty of immediate action you can take to reduce your electricity use and stay cool:
-Keep sunlight out during the day and let cool air in at night.
-Ditch the incandescent bulbs.
-Put frozen water bottles in front of a table or window fan.
-Do your cooking and clothes drying outside.
-Ensure your fan blades are spinning counter clockwise.
