Trees are not only beautiful, they are essential to nature and the environment

. Not only do they provide shade in times of heat, they also help mammals breathe easier. This is because trees produce oxygen and reduce carbon dioxide. Trees are also responsible for preventing erosion and can also moderate ground temperature.

There are many varying families of trees and they range in height, shape and other characteristics. Some of the tallest trees in the world are found in North America, but there are other places where very tall trees exist.

One of the tallest trees in the world is known as Coastal Redwoods. These trees generally grow to a height of 370 feet or more. It is a part of the Sequoia, from the cypress family of trees. Redwoods are also called California Redwood or Giant Redwood and were initially found in southwest Oregon and Florida. Due to the their ability to resist decay, they has been used for trestles and railroad ties in the California region. This tree can live for over 3,000 years and today a type of Redwood sits in Redwood National Park where it is listed as the tallest tree in the world at an astounding height of 379.1 feet.

The Centurion mountain ash is named among the tallest trees in the world, at a height of 326.8 feet. It originated from Southeastern Australia and is also called stringy gum, swamp gum or Victorian ash and comes from the Eucalyptus family of trees. Their average lifespan is about 400 years. The Centurion is an evergreen tree and survives in cool mountainous areas; they are fast growing at a rate of over one meter per year. The tallest eucalyptus samples were found in Tasmania by European settlers. However, they have since then been destroyed as a result of advanced age, bushfires or logging.

The Coast Douglas-fir is an evergreen that is found in Oregon. It reaches a maximum height of up to 390 feet and can live up to 1000 years. This tree is the second largest conifer specimen in the world after the coast Redwood. The wood from this tree is generally used for plywood, pilings and timber as the tree is stated to be the number one yielder of timber in North America. The Coast Douglas-fir is also used to make poles, flooring, veneers, furniture, and railroad ties and is also used for landscaping purposes. This tree may look familiar to many people because it has been shown in TV-series such as the X-files and twin peaks.
