Top cities in Shandong Province
Shandong Province is situated in the eastern part of China on the lower reaches of the Yellow River
. It borders on the Bohai and Huanghai seas in the east, and overlooks the Korean Peninsula and the Japan Archipelago across a vast stretch of sea. The province has a total area of 156,000 square kilometers (about 60,235 square miles) and a total population of over 90 million.
1. Jinan
Jinan is a historical city with a history of some 2,000 years and is famed for its numerous relics. It is the cradle of the Longshan Relics Culture, the reputed prehistoric culture of China and is found in Longshan Town of Jinan, hence the name. In the area of Jinan, you will find far more than you would expect, the ancient Great Wall of the Qi State (a state of the
Zhou Dynasty (770B.C. 221B.C.)), the colored sculptures of the Song Dynasty (960-1279) in the Lingyan Temple and so on.
2. Qingdao
Qingdao, a beautiful seaside city, is located in the southeast part of Shandong Province. To the east, a short distance across the Yellow Sea, lie Korea and Japan, making Qingdao an important city for international trade. For thirty three years, up to 1949, Qingdao was a colony of Germany and Japan. Thus, Qingdao has a great deal of European architecture. This foreign architecture -a remnant of the colonial past- now beautifies this seaside city.
3. Weifang
History: Historic relics of more than 7,000 years ago were unearthed in this time-honored city. During the Xia and Shang dynasties (21st - 11th century BC), small kingdoms lay scattered all over the domain of Weifang. After the Qin (221BC-206BC) united China, the central government of the successive dynasties all set counties and shires to administrate this region.
4. Dezhou
History: The history of Dezhou can be traced back more than four thousand years according to the elaborate articles of black pottery that have been excavated in the area. Yu the Great dredged nine rivers to control flooding and five of the rivers run through present Dezhou. Dezhou Region was established in 1950 and promoted to being a regional city in 1994.
5. Yantai
In 2004, China Central Television (CCTV) recognized Yantai as the most "Charming City of China." Yantai is located in the northeast of the Shandong Province. It is bordered by both the Yellow Sea and the Bohai Sea, and lies across from South Korea and Japan. The city includes four districts - Zhifu, Fushan, Mouping and Laishan, and Changdao County, and administers seven county-level cities - Penglai, Laiyang, Haiyang and Longkou, Laizhou, Zhaoyuan and Qixia. Of these, Zhifu is the central district. Although Yantai is not a metropolis like Beijing and Shanghai, it has its own unique charm.
6. Weihai
Physical Features: Weihai is located in an undulant hilly area featuring gentle slopes and broad valleys. Apart from the major hilly areas, Weihai has broad area of littoral and mountain foot plains. The terrain of the city slopes gently, and most of the hills are less than 300 meters (984 feet) high. Its seashore area is winding with numerous interleaving headland bays, harbors and islets.
