A childs first day at school can be a daunting experience indeed, as up until then their day to day life had no doubt been pretty simple and straight forward. However, faced with the prospect of educating, inspiring and generally looking after up to 30 new faces, the teacher has just as much right to be apprehensive about how to handle the first day of a new class. Perhaps the most essential thing for any pupil or teacher on the first day is the obligatory ice breaker. Unlike adults, young children often need a reason, or excuse, to interact with each other and share hobbies, interests and facts about themselves, so this is where ice breaking exercises can be incredibly useful. Heres a few great ways for children to get to know each other on their first day. Get to know the characters of each pupil in the classroom with a game like My name is ____ and if I was an animal I would be a(n) _____. Start this off by using yourself as an example, as this will break the ice between yourself and the pupils and give you the chance to show the pupils how its done, e.g. My name is _____ and if I was an animal I would be a dog because I am very friendly, I pay attention and I love going for walks. This is a good way to get to know each child and is a great non-competitive way for each pupil to settle in. Another way to break the ice in the class and get creative is to make something personal to each pupil, which can then be stuck around the classroom so pupils can get to know each other (and its also a good way to remember names). For example, perhaps each child could draw up a family tree or create posters about themselves. A fun way to do this is to trace the pupils head onto A3 paper, this silhouette can then be split into hobbies, facts, family and when I grow up, allowing each pupil to fill in their own heads and stick them on the wall. Also, modern educational tools, like, interactive whiteboard resources, can also be a good way to display and showcase pupils work to the class. Similarly, making personalised bookmarks can be a great tool for inspiring childrens creativity and breaking the ice. Make it a fun and, if need be, messy project and encourage pupils to make their bookmark as elaborate and colourful as can be. This activity lends itself to starting a new book for the year, so not only can the children use their new bookmarks but by reading a chapter a week of a book, it encourages reading and also applies a comfortable level of structure to the new class.About the Author:
