Top theft hotspots revealed – is your postcode on the list?
With new research coming to light, which focuses on the areas most likely to have
made a claim for theft, some home owners are becoming extra vigilant when it comes to their security. According to Britain's number one comparison site, people in London are the most likely in the UK to make a claim for theft on their home insurance policy. London held ten of the top 20 postcode districts most likely to have made a claim for theft, an increase of 100 per cent on the previous year. That said, a Manchester postcode took the top spot with regards to the highest proportion of theft claims, and Leeds and Bristol also had two spots in the top 20. No matter where you live, there is always a risk your home could become a victim of theft, and it's therefore vital you have adequate home insurance cover in place.
There's no denying that having your home burgled is an emotional and traumatic experience. After all, who wouldn't find it hard to come to terms with the lost of their beloved private possession? And, putting personal attachments aside, who wouldn't cry out loud after finding out that the items stolen were not covered by their current insurance? There is much at stake, but one thing that can cover you against such eventualities is home contents insurance.
It's entirely up to you whether you take it out or not. Contents insurance usually covers most things in your home that you might take with you if you were to move home. This means all of your possessions should be included in the insurance policy and need to be counted in with the cost when you are totalling it all up to calculate the sum insured.
You are usually covered with this type of
home insurance cover for fire, theft, water and flood damage, and vandalism. You may find the insurance policy also covers accidental damage to items such as TV screens, mirrors or carpets. However, not all providers offer this accidental damage cover as standard, and you may have to pay for this protection. Check the policy to see what the cover entails.
There are many insurance companies offering various insurance policies, but getting the right cover for your home needs a cautious approach and a clear understanding of how your home will be covered. Try to carry out a thorough amount of research to make sure that your home insurance cover is the most appropriate one for you.
You never know when an opportunistic thief may strike, so it's important that you ensure home contents insurance is fully up to date, and is at a high enough level to cover all belongings sufficiently.
