Top tips for personalising your home/work space

When you're at work, staring at grey cubicle walls all day can be depressing, but you also don't want to decorate your office in a way that makes you look unprofessional. However, it is possible to personalise your home/work space in a professional and effective manner.

Before you begin however, ask about your company's policy on desk decorations. You can obviously do what you want if you work from home, but your company may have restrictions on what they consider acceptable. Find out what they are before you are required to remove family photos or that unusual calendar! It is however, usually acceptable to hang framed qualifications, business certificates or awards on the wall. These will remind coworkers and clients of your credentials and accomplishments, not to mention that they will provide professional-looking decoration.

Choose a colour scheme. You can bring some life to your desk by repeating colours for your desk items, such as your folders, mouse pad and stapler. A good choice is blue, as it perceived as being a corporate colour, but still adds a personal touch to your work space.

A simple but important tip is to get rid of any clutter. All those stacks of paper make you look disorganised, stressed and even overwhelmed. They don't always have to go into the rubbish bin but they should be sorted and organised into folders inside your desk, or somewhere else hidden from view. The only papers on your desk should be those that are directly related to your current task. Many people will notice a dramatic improvement in their productivity once the clutter is gone.

Invest in a quality, comfortable chair. If you are going to be chained to your desk all day, you need to be comfortable. If you are always fidgeting because you can't get comfortable in your seat, you are going to be distracted and less productive. Try asking your supervisor to get you a good chair but if that does not succeed; you might want to consider getting one yourself. Visit an office supply store and actually try out all the chairs to find one that you like. Don't simply choose a chair because it is on sale or it looks like it might be comfortable; try before you buy!

Add a little green to your workspace in the form of plants. Consider oxygen-generating plants, as they will help get rid of any stale air, while helping to liven things up and make your office a more inviting space. Adding more light to your work area is easily accomplished by adding a desk lamp. If you work in a cubicle however, it is likely that you have to tolerate the existing lighting.

Frosted window film can be applied to windows at the office and home and is ideal where windows face an area of high people traffic or where the windows of two or more buildings, houses or rooms are too close to each other. With frosted film, you can be assured that a person passing by or someone in the next house cannot see into your house.

Creating a more relaxing work environment can be different if you work from home. In this case, you will want to make sure your work area is relaxing, but not too relaxing, and located somewhere you will not be constantlyinterrupted. You might not need the family photos since they are in other rooms of the house. Otherwise, the tips above can be applied to your home office as well.
