Torchwood, the first successful spin-off of the great British sci-fi institutionDoctor Who, has a great deal of potential: the characters are interesting, the premise offers a wide scope, and the writing is good to great. Some viewers, drawn in by the promise ofWho with sex, may be disappointed by the relatively small stakes in play here compared with the epic scale sometimes seen on the parent program. It's certainly necessary to approachTorchwood, not as anotherWho or even a24, but rather as a small show about the Wales branch office of an alien-hunting task force. Once you've done that, you're good to go.

Description
Torchwood follows a small group of specialists who use advanced extraterrestrial technology to combat alien threats.
Their leader is Jack Harkness, established inDoctor Who as a former time-traveling con-man who died and was resurrected.
The newcomer is Gwen Cooper, a police officer who stumbles across Torchwood's secret workings and is invited to stay.
Jack hopes that Gwen will provide a much-needed note of normalcy amidst their obsession with alien gadgets and misdeeds.
The team also features the sardonic Owen, the tech-savvy Toshiko, and the normally reserved odd-jobber/receptionist Ianto.
Torchwood is being shown on BBC America on Saturday nights at 9 p.m. ET starting Sept. 8.
Guide Review - Torchwood
The first four episodes are a bit of a mixed bag that reveal both the promise and potential problems with this interesting new show.
The first episode, "Everything Changes" by Russell T. Davies, exists solely to introduce the two leads, Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) and Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles), and their little world of cool alien hardware; in terms of plot very little actually happens. Many sci-fi shows hang their first shows around an alien menace that's going to be a recurring thrill-maker;Torchwood's first E.T., called a Weevil (who wears a leather jacket because they only made the head) is the alien equivalent of a bottom-feeder. Superfluous to the story, it mainly inspires grousing about how unglamorous their work can be positively perverse for a pilot episode.Who fans waiting for backstory on how Jack, last seen on a space station in the 2001st century, made it back to 21st century Wales will have to settle in for a periodic tidbits, as Davies has decided to be coy on this point.
"Day One" by Chris Chibnall has more going for it, including a fairly explicit sex scene in a nightclub bathroom involving an alien who turns all her partners to dust. "Ghost Machine" byWho script editor Helen Raynor has an eerie quality as Gwen and Owen (the delightful Burn Gorman) have encounters with disturbing past events thanks to a stray aliken device. "Cyberwoman" is probably the weakest of these four, despite the welcome premise of a partially complete Cyberwoman left over from the Cyber invasion seen in theWho episode "Doomsday"; the gibbering protestations of Torchwood receptionist Ianto (Gareth David-Lloyd), whose girlfriend the Cyberwoman once was, are too much by half, though in other episodes Ianto is a more welcome presence.
