Toronto is Canada's Coolest City

The city of Toronto is situated in the province of Ontario in Canada. The city is the capital of the province and Canada's largest metropolitan center. The municipality itself is located along the shorelines of Lake Ontario in the southwestern part of the province. Known for economic and financial zones, large firms and the Toronto Stock Exchange call the city their home. Corporations for telecommunications, transportation, medical research labs, software production and television can be found in Toronto.

Practically half the city's population is made up of immigrants, creating an ethnically diverse core. The name for the city is believed to have been sourced from an Aboriginal word to refer to woods standing in water. European settlers (mostly of Irish descent) founded the locale after the Huron tribes. In 1834, Toronto officially incorporated and has continued to be successful ever since.

Geographical Features

The city is made of long areas of waterfront shores, a large harbour and various islands. The city covers an area of 243 square miles (630 square km). The region of the city are marked by Lake Ontario and Etobicoke Creek in the south, the Rouge River to the east with highway 427 to the west and Steeles Avenue to the north.

Small sized bodies of water such as tributaries, feed into the Toronto Harbour and have created small islands, ravines and escarpments. Thick forests have grown in the ravine areas. Due to the dense forest regions, the city has developed parks, trails and sites for citizens to enjoy. Even though the ravines give drainage solutions, flooding often still occurs due to heavy rainfall. The city's slope ranges from 246 feet (75 m) to 686 feet (209 m) in some places.

Apparent minorities make up 46% of the population. Some groups include: Filipino, South Asian, Latin American, Black and Chinese. The city's gender population is: 54% female to 48% male.

Approximately 100,000 immigrants arrive in Toronto annually, making the city extremely diverse. While English remains the dominant spoken language in the city, Chinese and Italian are widely used frequently at work. Emergency services now can answer calls in 150 different languages.
