The implants should fit so the bone needs to be shaped by removing small amounts of the bone surface. A small portion of the tibias top part is also removed to make the end of the bone flat. The kneecaps back surface is also removed.

In total knee replacement procedure, attaching the implants to each of the three bones is crucial. The implants should be designed well in a way that it provides movement like that of a healthy knee. With a special kind of bone cement, they are attached to their appropriate place. There are two parts in the implant that fits over the tibia:

Metal base plate

A durable plastic surface that serves as a spacer between the metal implant is attached to the base plate

After knee replacement and once the implants and ligaments are in place, the tissue layers and skins edges will be sewn together. Then, the knee will be wrapped in sterile bandages. It is very important for the surgeon to do this properly to enable the wound to heal and close in a timely manner. A plastic tube is sometimes used to allow fluids to drain from the site during the first few hours after surgery. It may be inserted on the wound itself before sewing the wound. The total knee replacement procedure is almost completed after closing the wound.

Life after knee replacement is very promising by reducing pain and restoring the function of the knee. Although every invasive knee replacement surgery has risks, the surgeon will evaluate everything first before committing with the patient for a safe operation. A successful total knee replacement procedure can significantly improve ones quality of life. After rehabilitation, patients are expected to go back to, at least, light to moderate activities. The success depends on the patients conscious effort in following his or her surgeons post-operative instructions for an immediate recovery. Moreover, the persons weight is also relevant to avoid damaging the new knee.
