Total Secularization of Sport

Total Secularization of Sport

Total Secularization of Sport

Sport is one of the most important activities in our lives. Other than being a healthy means of fun and leisure, it is also essential for helping man chasten his personality and sharpen his physical and mental strength. However, as was the case with all other aspects of life, sport has also received its fair share of total-secularization in our post-modern world.

In his book "Partial and Total Secularism", Dr. Abdul-Wahhab Al-Mesiri (may Allah bless his soul) talked about how sport got sterilized from its humane social values, and was redefined from an extremely Darwinstic and wanton perspective. He explained how instead of being a method of recreation, refreshment as well as social and mental empowerment, the ultimate goal behind it was turned into merely striving to achieve world-class titles and winning trophies and golden medals. And instead of being a means of bringing people together, it became a cause for problems between societies. We always hear about fierce riots which were started by a group of people only because their team lost the match. A very recent example that demonstrates this issue was the latest clash between Egypt and Algeria over a football game.

Another important issue concerning the total secularization of sport lies in its Economic implications. Instead of man practicing sport as a means of refreshment for the body and mind so that he could get back to his work with new energy, he is now willing to dedicate his work to it. For example, many governments are now willing to spend tremendous amounts of money on renovating their cities and building new stadiums for the mere purpose of getting their country elected by the FIFA as a host for a future World Cup championship.

But perhaps the most crucial aspect worth discussing when we talk about total secularization of sport is the athlete himself. The athlete, who was supposed to be a normal human being, practicing sport just like everybody normally does, now seems more like an organic machine with no control over himself. He needs to maintain a certain level of physical fitness, hardly achievable within the ordinary capabilities of the human body, and he must obey all the instructions of his coach without hesitation. Even worse than that is how athletes are now being used as tools for marketing different kinds of totally unrelated merchandise such as food, tooth pastes, shampoos or even shaving creams. He even became a piece of merchandise himself!

In the end, we can conclude that sport is almost no longer an activity for humans to practice their humanity and strengthen the intimacy of their relationships between each other. Instead, it is now becoming totally devoid of humane, moral and social values, and has become a goal of its own.
