Tours In Jerusalem

There can be few cities in the world that are steeped in such history

, mystery and controversy as Jerusalem. This holy city in Israel is home to three of the worlds' major religions; Christianity, Judaism and Islam. With a history dating back to Biblical times, since King David pronounced it the capital of Israel in 1000 BC, it has captured the interest of the world and visitors flock every year to experience the holiest of all cities.

Today's Jerusalem bears little resemblance to the city we heard about in school, but the new city sits easily alongside the ancient relics of a life we can but imagine. While you will stay in modern accommodation, the minute you enter the old city it is like stepping back in time and you can practically feel the essence of bygone days, and the shiver up the spine is obligatory.

There are many companies offering tours around Jerusalem such as Discover Israel and Yoav Hasson. They all encompass trips along the well walked majestic walls and streets of this unique city, and take in the best known sites. There are so many points of interest in Jerusalem that you could be mistaken for thinking that tours will last for days, these have been prioritised so you get to see the best the city has to offer.

Please remember that before you join any tour of Jerusalem that modest dress is required, and check with your tour company what is acceptable with them as some will not allow sleeveless tops or shorts. Covering the head is mandatory when visiting the holy areas. Also bear in mind that if you want to visit Yad Vashem, the Holocaust memorial take a tour that isn't on a Friday, Saturday or any Jewish holiday.

Jerusalem tours will generally start off with a drive to the Mount of Olives to take in the sumptuous panoramic views over the city, and give you the first of your many photo opportunities. Once you have entered the old city you can expect to take in the City of David. The name is somewhat misleading as it is extremely small and had an estimated maximum population of around 1500.

Other amazing sites to behold include the Jewish and Armenian quarters and the recently restored and excavated Roman road, Cardo. You will take in the Kotel, the Jewish Wailing Wall and, in the Christian quarter, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and take a stroll along the Via Dolorosa.

The new city of Jerusalem isn't excluded from the comprehensive tours, and you will get the opportunity to take in the Knesset, the Israeli Parliament and, if you are taking a tour on a Monday-Thursday, Yad Vashem. On weekend tours and on Jewish holidays this is generally replaced a visit to another attraction, such as the Dormition Abbey.

This is by no means a comprehensive guide to Jerusalem tours, as various operators have different itineraries. If you have specific sites in mind which you want to visit, check out the operators to see which tours which suits your personal requirements the best.
