Toyota Motor Corp Has Recalled Nearly 2.2 Million Vehicles

Toyota Motor Corp. has recalled nearly 2.2 million vehicles, citing a flaw that could cause the accelerator pedal to stick, after the security crisis that has stalked automaker in the world for more than a year.

The surprise action Thursday extended a string of damaging recalls covering 19 million Toyota vehicles worldwide since 2009, mostly on complaints of unintended acceleration related to defective mats and gas pedals.

The recall covers several additional Toyota and Lexus, and renewed questions about the quality in the largest automaker in the world and their ability to shake the persistent security crisis that has crippled sales and tarnished his image.

Total Toyotas recalled in the U.S. topped Thursday nearly 1.8 million cars and trucks that the top global automaker sold here in 2010.

The new recalls come a little over two weeks after the U.S. security authorities authorized Toyota announces a 10-month study concluded that the electronic controls of the company were not to blame for reported episodes of acceleration out of control and safety advocates and some members of Congress had suspected.

"They want to put this behind," said Scott Painter, CEO of automotive buyer resources TrueCar.com. "They have suffered financially and are trying to get customers back."

Toyota's market share in the U.S. fell to 17 percent in late 2009 just over 15 per cent in December 2010. They have been forced to discount heavily to attract buyers.

Painter said that the withdrawal would be a new chill in the short term, but help buyers of Toyota in the long term, especially since Thursday's developments followed the advice of regulators who did a survey on the subject.

Toyota shares fell 7 cents, to close at $ 90.10 New York Stock Exchange.

Shuba Srinivasan, a marketing expert at Boston University School of Management, said that Toyota has taken a step "in the right direction," the trust of new audiences and build their brand.

Mike Rozembajgier, vice president of ExpertRECALL recall, said Toyota will remain the center of attention and security must be "very careful to make sure they have adequate plans in place to remember."

recent memory against the risk that loose mats carpet may block the throttle and cause unintended acceleration of six Toyota and Lexus.

Toyota said its decision to extend the initial call was due to its ongoing discussions with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

NHTSA chief, David Strickland said the agency reviewed more than 400,000 pages of documents since last spring to determine whether the scope of recalls Toyota had enough.

"As a result, the agency, NHTSA has asked Toyota to recall these additional vehicles, and now the company has made, our study has been completed," said Strickland.

Toyota spokesman John Hanson said there were no consumer complaints, which have encouraged the activity. Toyota said it was unaware of any damages resulting from such points.

"What we're trying to do is ensure that we captured all the vehicles that could have a problem like this," said Hanson.

Safety advocates are skeptical the matter is resolved.

"The reality is that there is a sequence of problems that will haunt the company until they arrive at the real root of the problem," said Sean Kane, president of Safety Research & Strategies, Inc.

Kane group of lawyers will advise the applicants', including cases against Toyota. The company will take over the causes sudden acceleration of the contingent liability of $10 billion.

Hanson said the new points have different causes, including 1.4 million vehicles for mats in bulk can trap the gas pedal.

This included 761,000 RAV4 crossover for the years 2006 to 2010 model, 603,000 crossovers 4Runner for model years 2003 to 2009 and about 17,000 Lexus LX 570 vehicles for model years 2008 to 2011.

Toyota has also recalled 372,000 RX 330, RX 350 and RX 400h vehicles and 397,000 Highlander and Highlander HV vehicles ,because the clips that hold the carpet in the driver's side could detach and affect the service after the accelerator.

Some 20,000 Lexus GS 300 and GS 350 vehicles with four-wheel drive were recalled to change the shape of a plastic pad embedded in the carpet on the driver side floor.

The company also recalled 99.000 Highlander and RX models of family videos carpet outside the United States.
