TRABZON'S CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

Trabzon, where known history goes back 4000 years ago, has been one of the rare cities that attracted the interest of whole world at all stages of the history. Its geographical importance, its location at a transition point, hosting different civilizations are the leading factors making Trabzon an important city. Such a city having a long history should also have a colorful cultural life. "Urban culture" is being reflected by Trabzon for years. Trabzon as the commercial and administrative center, show that the city has a live and ongoing cultural background with educational-cultural-commercial centers established centuries ago.

We are able to see the existence of cultural institutions in many historic documents about Trabzon, improving further after the conquest in 1461 by Great Turkish Sultan Fatih Sultan Mehmet. After the declaration of the republic, in Trabzon, where people are defined as "smart, productive, entrepreneur and hardworking" by Mustafa Kemal Atatrk, many efforts have been done, high importance has been given to the educational and cultural movements.

Trabzon being visited by world's famous travelers, for centuries, has attracted the attention of the whole world. From Xenophon to Evliya elebi, from Fallmerayer to Frunze, hundreds of travelers visited Trabzon and transmitted their thoughts to documents called "travel books" where the main meeting point is that Trabzon "with mysterious nature, geographical location, its being an important trade and cultural center in its relations with Central Asia, Caucasus, the Far East, Middle East" is an essential city.

TRABZON CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS

All residential units have schools, besides Trabzon is very rich in terms of libraries and cultural centers giving in the color of cultural life. In Trabzon, there are all educational institutions required from primary school to higher education levels. One of 17 provinces of the Ottoman Empire, Trabzon has witnessed an intense cultural development after the conquest. At this development in the role of the libraries is important. We want to talk about our libraries in the historical course:

Sarazade Library: Sarazade Mustafa Efendi founded it in 1762. It is at the top floor of the small mosque facing Ortahisar Mosque.

Fetvahane Library: The Governor of Trabzon Treasurer Osmanpaa opened it to service in 1845. In this library, which is located adjacent to Ortahisar Mosque in the west direction, there were important works. During the invasion of Trabzon, director of Russian classics museum Prof. navovitch Ouspenski, transfered 497 books to Russia.

Ortahisar Library: the Governor of Trabzon Treasurer Osmanpaa opened it in 1842, at the east side of Ortahisar Mosque.

Hatuniye Library: It was planned to be openedby the Governor of Trabzon Treasurer Osmanpaain 1844, however after his death his brother, Abdullah Paa, founded it.

Defence of Rights Association Library: It was founded in Trabzon in the National Struggle years and served as the library of Defense of the Rights Association. Books have been given as gifts to the library founded to unite people of Trabzon around the idea of national struggle and it has been enriched.

Trabzon Teachers Association Library: It was the library of Teachers Association carrying out activities in Trabzon, founded by Mustafa Resit Tarakolu. The books of the Teachers Association founded "to donate future generations with modern knowledge and national opinion, to bring them up with feelings of national patriotism and hardworking" have been transferred to the Library Community Center established in Trabzon.

Trabzon Trkoca Library: first, in order to ensure that young people do not spend their free time at coffee houses, Trk Oca established Children's Library in 1925 in Trabzon. Librarianship activities of Trk Oca, which aims to strengthen the national consciousness, continued with this purpose.

Trabzon Community Center Library: Trabzon Community Center set up and opened its library on June 24, 1932. In 1943, it became a library with 3000-volume books. It has contributed to the city's cultural life with the magazine "NAN". It spread the services to a wide public population with its 47,000 books.

Trabzon Provincial Public Library: Trabzon Provincial Public Library was opened on 1 October 1927. The name of it was National Library at the time it was first opened. Then, its name was changed as Trabzon Public Library. Since 1960, it is called Provincial Public Library providing unity with other libraries all over Turkey. On May 19, 1966 it was moved to Atapark by General Directorate of Libraries by spending 400,000 TL for its building today. Previously, it was carrying out its activities in the historical building at the historical square that is serving as the Journalists Association today.

Provincial Public Library today, has been providing service with over 50,000 books, 100,000 readers annually and with its computer-based system. In addition, with rare manuscripts and "series records", it is an important cultural center lighting the way of researchers on the way to history with its important sources.

Today in Trabzon library services has spread into rural areas; there are public libraries at districts as well as towns.

Also Trabzon Municipality District Libraries and Ismail Hakki Berkmen History Library provide important services in the city center.

Library providing service within the body of Karadeniz Technical University serves more to academic staff, students and researchers.

HISTORICAL RICHNESS

In our province, there are 550 historical cultural properties that are registered and taken under protection by the Ministry of Culture. Besides this, there are also regions determined as "Natural Heritage" and taken under protection.

It is possible to come across numerous historical monuments at the city center and districts. These are mainly:


"Castle of Trabzon, Kalepark, Yenicuma Mosque, Armory, Aqueducts, Akakale, Hagia Sophia, Kk Ayvasl, Ortahisar Mosque, Molla Nakip Mosque, Kudrettin Mosque, Hsn Gktu Mosque, Girls Monastery, Kutul Monastery, Sumela Monastery, Santa Maria Church, Glbaharhatun Mosque, skenderpaa Mosque, Tophane Turkish Bath, Sekiz Direkli Turkish Bath, Meydan Turkish Bath, Fountains, Bridges, Atatrk's Pavilion, Memiaa Palace, Erdodu Bey Mosque, Musa Paa Mosque, Sarazade School, Ortahisar Observatory, Emir Mehmet Mausoleum, Hamzapaa Mausoleum, Bazaar"

In Trabzon, which is one of the oldest established cities at Black Sea coast, besides the monuments briefly presented above, there are lovely fountains, houses, bridges reflecting us the pretty side of the history, in each village and neighborhood. Akaabat Central neighborhood, Srmene houses, old Turkish houses of Ortahisar neighborhood, mansions, other historical monuments even today, carrying out their functions, are all large and small cultural and natural assets of our city.
