They estimate the alcohol concentration in a breath sample and calculate the corresponding BAC level from it. When the Blood Alcohol Concentration or BAC is between 50mg & 80mg

The driver will be arrested, brought to a Garda Station and be required to provide evidential breath, blood and/or urine specimens. In cases where the Blood Alcohol Concentration is between 50 and 80mg, the driver will be served a fixed penalty notice and fined 200. He will also be awarded 3 penalty points. The penalty points will remain on his license record for a period of three years. A driver accumulating 12 points in a three year period will be disqualified from driving for a period of 6 months.

When the Blood Alcohol Concentration or BAC is between 80mg & 100mg

The driver will be arrested, brought to a Garda Station and be required to provide evidential breath, blood and/or urine specimens. In cases where the Blood Alcohol Concentration is between 20 and 100mg, the driver will be served a fixed penalty notice and fined 400. He will also be disqualified from driving for a period of 6 months.

When the Blood Alcohol Concentration or BAC for learners, newly qualified orprofessional drivers (Goods vehicle, Bus or a Public Service Vehicle like Taxi) is between 20mg & 80mg

The driver will be arrested, brought to a Garda Station and required to provide evidential breath, blood and/or urine specimens. In cases where the Blood Alcohol Concentration is between 20 and 80mg, the driver will be served a fixed penalty notice and fined 200. He will also be disqualified from driving for a period of 3 months.
