Traditions From The 50's

A traditions is defined as the handing down of statements

, beliefs, legends, customs, and information from generation to generation, especially by word of mouth or by practice. Traditions are an essential part of our lives. They bring generations together.

Some traditions are old, and some are new. Some have been going strong since the 50's. Some of these traditions include sock hops, soda fountain parties, and ice cream socials.

Now, however, most of these traditions go by different names. With fast-food joints like Dairy Queen, ice cream socials have become commonplace, the simple everyday gathering of friends; soda fountain parties from the 50's have mutated into friends hanging out at fast food joints. And modern sock hops are now simple dances.

Things such as dancing, music, and food are some of the most basic traditions that draw generations together. They are actually create some of the strongest bonds between generations. And, surprisingly, these things are also the main ingredients of sock hops.

Such dances were popular in the 50's. They were most popular among high school students and occurred in school gymnasiums. These dances were all about the strong bonds of dancing, listening to music, eating, and spending time with friends!

Things aren't so different since the 50's. Shakes and hamburgers are still two of the most loved food items; fashion, friends, and crushes are still a few of teenagers' highest priorities. Today's high schoolers attend dances for the same reasons hoppers of the 50's did. And the dances still consist of the same basic traditions.

Girls today spend hours in front of the mirror just like girls in the 50's did. Boy's today are still a tad bit nervous to ask girls to dance, just like their grandfather's were when they attended hops back in the 50's. And even though many years have passes since those first hops, there are still a few wallflowers at today's dances.

There are so many traditions we have today that modernized versions of traditions from the 50's: Sonic drive-ins are imitations of 50's hamburger joints, bowling shirts that were once only worn to bowling tournaments are now worn on the street every day, and fedora's, a popular hat worn in the 50's, are now back in style. Teenagers today may wear different types of clothing to dances or "sock hops" but they are still the same dances. Because they are based around some of the fundamental needs of our society, they will never cease to be popular, no matter how big the gap gets between the now and the 50's.
