Traffic Accidents - Know What To Do

A traffic accident is something no one wants to be involved in

, but statistically the chances are extremely high that you will be involved in more than one accident during your driving lifetime either as the driver or a passenger.

Fortunately, the majority of accidents are relatively minor and don't involve any personal injury. Nonetheless, any accident, however minor is very frightening and stressful. This means that your brain may not act as logically as usual and you forget all the things that you need to be doing to sort out the accident.

It's wise to have a list of the first things you need to do put away in your glove compartment. It can come in handy at any time.

Basically there are five initial things you need to attend to. Firstly, you must stop; this may sound obvious, but many people involved in minor collisions where the vehicle is still drivable continue to drive on and don't stop. This is often out of pure shock and not because they are deliberately trying to get away. The problem is that leaving the scene of an accident is a serious offence.

Secondly, check yourself and other people involved for injuries. If anyone is injured then it's wise to call an ambulance; the police will automatically get notified by the ambulance service. If anyone is injured, do not move them; it can make what appears to be a simple injury life threatening. Make them as comfortable as possible and ensure they are kept warm.

Thirdly make sure you warn other traffic. Try to ensure that lights, flares or warning signs have been placed near the accident to warn oncoming traffic. There are many occasions where a minor accident turns into a major accident because the oncoming traffic didn't see the accident.

Fourthly, make sure you exchange full information with drivers of any other vehicle involved. This means taking down the personal details of the other drivers and you will need to provide your personal details. You should also take a look at a person's driving licence.

Lastly, if the police are not needed at the scene of the accident it is the responsibility of each driver to make a written record of the accident and submit it to the police within 10 days of the accident. The type of information you need to record does vary by state so it's sensible to check out what the law is for the state that you live in. Generally you will need to supply the time, date and place and of course your personal details and those of others involved. You should also supply insurance details. Additionally, supply the weather condition and the road condition at the time of the accident.

One important point to remember throughout this ordeal is to make certain that you don't admit that the accident was your fault, even if it clearly was. It's so easy to turn to the other driver at this time of stress and say you are sorry.
