Traffic wardens have always been hated by motorists, and their ways of giving us tickets have gone from the sublime to the downright ridiculous. From lifting up cars, painting lines underneath and putting them back down again to clamping people while their engines are still on, they are gleaning themselves a really bad name amongst the general public.

It's hardly surprising really then that a member of public has fought one of the new policies being imposed by the council in Merton. He got out of his van to go to the ticket machine, was away from his vehicle for sixty seconds, and when he returned, he had a ticket. This had been applied by two parking attendants in an unmarked car, who had been watching the innocent man while he left his vehicle, with honourable intentions.

By law, parking officials should wear readily distinguishable' uniforms, so that it is transparent who they are and what they are doing. They are only supposed to use vehicles to get to the areas where they are working.

The ticket, rules unfair by a traffic adjudicator, would have cost him sixty pounds, a little unfair for a man fully intending to pay for his parking.

The council could appeal the ruling, but there is uproar in the community at the underhand tactics being used to drain those extra pennies out of the unsuspecting public in a time where we all need all the cash we can get.
