Trafficking Narcotics

Ever since I became conscious to the sorry fact of narcotics abuse, its effects on the lives of addicts, their relations and surroundings and the welfare of society in general, it has astounded me why this is allowed to continue. Decade after decade this cancer in society is allowed to flourish, and as time flows by the tragedies spread, governments spend vast sums of money in feeble attempts to stem the flow and aid the victims; the providers of illicit narcotics rake in enormous amounts of money.

And with enormous amounts of money comes power. Power that can easily direct impoverished politicians along specific tracks, can direct their attention from this to that. Political parties need fuel for their campaigns, and as we all know, everything is for sale if the price is right.

It will never be enough to fight the underworld of drug trafficking with brute force. Police action is a very limited way to cure this, escalating police manpower simply increases prices of narcotics, profits of traffickers and the scale of crimes caused by desperate addicts. The only way is to start eliminating desperate addicts. And not by shooting them, as many of the victims of their crimes may sympathize with. It can be done by turning them from being desperate addicts, to addicts without compulsion for crime.

Some twenty years ago, an English psychiatrist named John Marks, did an experiment that proved, without doubt, that there is a way to help these desperate addicts. He started in the outskirts of the city of Liverpool, later moved to the city itself, and what he did was to provide free drugs to those in dire need. Along with the drugs, he provided therapy to the willing. There were conditions, though. The recipient had to be a local resident and to be free of criminal activity from admission to the program. John Marks provided each with the narcotic of choice, but in pure and sterile form. As it turned out, when these people were free from the constant hustle to finance their addiction, they started to take stock of their situation. Jobs and families had been lost, real friends were long gone. Some of these people continued to be addicts, with leisure on their hands, others found jobs, earned friends and stepped back into society. And a large part went to rehabilitation and rid themselves of their habit. Unfortunately this experiment was terminated by Liverpool politicians, and I leave it to you to deduct why.

Now, consider this experiment and what it has shown possible. If ALL civilized nations treated citizens with addiction to narcotics in this way, just imagine what change it would render. Drug related crime would sharply decline. Deaths and loss of health from contaminated drugs would almost vanish. And most vital of all, the business structure of illegal narcotics would collapse. No more customers. No more money. And no business in creating new customers in the schoolyard. And the cost would be minimal, legal narcotics are dirt cheap. Rehabilitation would be expensive, but so what?
