Training An Older Dog

Although an old dog is harder to trained, it is possible to train her to do anything a puppy can do

. Older dogs have better concentration compares to puppies.

You can teach an older dog to sit by commanding her to sit when she is sitting on the ground. Eventually, the dog will learn to obey you when you tell her to sit on command.

If you want to potty train your older dog, select a spot outside and bring her there each time you want her to eliminate. If you keep repeating this routine consistently, your dog will go to the spot to eliminate herself each time.

If you catch your dog doing it inside the house, don't show your anger to her. Instead, show her your disappointment. In order to prevent your dog from pooing inside the house, you have to take her out frequently enough to reinforce the training.

Before your dog goes to bed, lessen her food to prevent her from defecating inside the house. Do not scold your dog if she comes to wake you up. Instead, let her out so she can eliminate herself.

If you want to crate train your dog, leave the door of the crate open for the whole day and put her favorite treats inside. You can put a comfortable blanket which cannot be easily destroyed inside the crate along with her favorite toy. Soon, your dog will become used to the crate and loves to go in there for a nap. You can lock your dog in the crate for a short period of time in the beginning and lengthen the time as the training progresses. Older dogs have weaker bladders so don't lock your dog inside the crate for longer that they can hold.

If you want to train an older dog to walk on leash, go on a normal walk in the neighborhood. Walk at a slow pace that encourages the dog to pull. When the dog pull, stop and hold the leash firmly but don't try to pull it back to you. After that, give your dog a pat on the head and gives her a pat. After a month, your dog will learn to yield to the leash and no longer be taking you for a walk.

Obedience dog training classes are good for training older dogs. It also provides an opportunity for you to spend time and helps to create a bonding between you and the dog. When choosing an obedience training class, avoid those that practice harsh training methods. Instead, go for the obedience training class that promotes gentle training with mature dogs.
