Training English In Spain

Madrid's August weather is tough for any seasoned Madridilenos to tolerate

. So this week's fresh September breezes complimented my first session well. The metro is speeding me on my way to conference a leading entrepreneur in the north of the town. I have simply finished my TEFL in Madrid and am enjoying the wealth of new opportunities it provides.

My first student

I get the business park and satisfy my first ever student, a beautiful Portuguese businessman operating in Madrid. Silver-haired and charming, he welcomes me to his office with the offer of a cafe solo, my beverage of choice.

We have a great first session. I discover he lives in Madrid throughout the week and jigs home on Fri nights back to Lisbon to spend some time along with his child and wife. He talks wistfully of home and confides that he frequently flies home on Thursday evenings for a few hours and returns to Madrid in the morning so more time can be spent by him with his family. As I sip on my solo I get a comfortable sensation that has nothing to do with all the caffein.

His English is extremely good but like all pupils of a language he claims that it is and#34;very terrible, very poor, needs improving!and#34; It is when he begins to debate over the currency markets and the financial turmoil that I explain that he must have at least some confidence in his linguistic abilities.

More cafe solos

After a rousing game of cards I trot off back to the metro and rate to Plaza andel Castilla where I fulfill a charismatic Irishman for job interview. We order cafe solos and merrily chat about our encounters in Spain. He has been here for 20 years and a total expert at navigating round the town. Our meeting is adjourned and I wave him off as he rides back down south of the city on his bike. (Must get one of these at some point just for the dramatic way out.)

I verify my phone. Among my new Spanish friends wanders if I want to meet up for an intercambio. Si! I wander down to the favourite joint in Tetuan and he is met by me. Two besos afterwards and another cafe solo, I am happily floundering my approach through the Spanish terminology.

Taking the dive

Here I am traveling single in Madrid. Getting a TEFL in Madrid is not just about teaching English like it was here, but about everything you expertise on the way. There was no routine to this day of mine, only the cafe solos.
