Training For High School Sports

When you think about athletes training, you probably think about professionals

, but they have to get through high school first. High school athletes need to train hard in order to be a standout player.

You may think it odd to encourage teenagers to physically train for their sport year-round, but it is necessary if they are serious about being an athlete. For instance, if you play high school football there is only a few months of the year that you are allowed to train with the school for the sport.

As any professional athlete will tell you, you cannot train for only a small fraction of the year and expect to improve your skill level. Instead you will lose your muscle memory, and each season will be like starting all over again.

So if you want to be successful, you need to find a way to do some sort of training even during the off season to keep your body prepared for the game of football. The first step is obviously cardio.

The game of football requires a lot of running, and players are incredibly fast. You need to condition by either running on a treadmill daily, and/or participating in cross country and track.

You should be running for endurance, which means long distance as this will ensure that you can play an entire game without being exhausted at half-time. You should also incorporate sprints into your routine.

As with every sport, you will be required to get to certain place as fast as you possibly can. You probably will not have to sprint an entire game, but you want to have that explosive ability when the time comes.

No matter what the weather is like outside, you can find a way to run and do sprints. You can do it in your school gym, the local fitness center, and outdoor track, or even in your backyard.

Where you do it does not matter, you just need the ability to do fast sprints, and the stamina for long distance running. In addition to cardiovascular exercises, you should be doing strength training.

Football players do a lot of weight training during the season to build up their strength so it should be no different during the off-season. Your high school should have a weight room that you can use year-round free of charge.

You should use this as much as you can, not only to build strength, but you can be sure that the coach is going to see you in there working hard and knowing that you will be ready when the season starts.

If you school's gym does not have that great of a weight room, you can head to your local fitness center and use their equipment. They usually give a student-athlete discount, so you should ask.

Many serious athletes also purchase their own set of weights that they keep in the garage or basement for training. If you can afford it, it is a smart thing to buy since it will allow you to weight train at any time, even during the holidays when the schools and fitness centers are closed.

You should buy a bench press, with a bar bell and varying weights. You should also purchase dumbbells so you can do single arm repetitions.

Strength training machines that have weights for various upper and lower body exercises are also very beneficial as they also allow you to work on your legs. These may be more expensive, but they are well worth the cost if your use them frequently, and can be cheaper than a gym membership if used for more than one year.

When strength training, it is best to do single leg and single arm repetitions. This will ensure that one side of your body is not over-compensating for the other.

Often times, athletes have a very strong right side of the body, since they use it most, but their left limbs are not as powerful. This can be crippling on the football field, when you need both sides to be equally strong to perform at the highest level.

For example, if you are a wide receiver and you are running down the field and the ball is thrown over your right shoulder and the cornerback is pulling pushing on your right arm with his body, you need to be able to pull in the ball with your left hand. This will be nearly impossible if you have relied heavily on your right side during training.
