Trampoline Fun With Safety

I'm looking out my window watching kids going up and down

, up and down. They are having a wonderful time, laughing and talking, and trying to get one another's attention by seeing who can go the highest.

Oh what fun!I remember having a trampoline and jumping high.Well, high to me.My son and husband would laugh and say you're only getting two inches high.I knew I was much higher than that! I also remember the great fun we had in school during PE (Physical Education) class during the gymnastic season jumping on the trampoline and learning several routines.

Whenever I was on a trampoline there was supervision or in trampoline circles spotters.I am concerned with my neighborhood children out there jumping. They are out there quite often and I have not yet witnessed an adult present. The kids are usually all on the trampoline at one time.Sometimes all of them jumping at the same time and other times one or two are sitting while others are jumping.I know they perceive me as a worry wart since I have spoken to them about this, I just would hate to see one of those precious children hurt.

Just recently on CBS there was a show where they highlighted a person who had been paralyzed, and spoke about the dangers and even deaths caused by trampolines.I have heard about people being paralyzed by landing wrong, but I don't recall any publicized deaths. That must be why I am feeling even more concern for these children out there having fun. These children playing on the trampoline are all under the age of 12 with no supervision.

Marc Rabinoff, A trampoline safety expert from Denver, CO calls trampolines "quad machines" because they can turn you into a quadriplegic in four seconds."He also says these are not fluke accidents but rather a "very common" occurrence.

Apparently trampoline injuries are the cause of 98,000 trips to the emergency room in 2009.And 82 percent of the injuries were children under the age of 15, which is my cause for concern for my neighborhood children.A few of them are like my adopted children.I can only talk to them about the risks involved; it's up to their parents to make sure they follow the safety standards for trampolines.

Most injuries are caused by colliding with another person when multiple people are on the trampoline, landing wrong when attempting tricks, falling or jumping off, and landing on the springs or frame of the trampoline. The majority of injuries occur at residential homes.

If you follow the safety procedures that come with your trampoline you can prevent the majority of injuries, including paralysis, fractures, sprains and bruises. The basic safety rules are:

*Making sure the trampoline is on a level area

*Allow only one person on the trampoline at a time

*Have spotters located around the trampoline

*Adequate padding on supporting bars, hooks and springs

*Don't attempt or allow somersaults due to risk of neck and head injuries

*Always, Always, have adult supervision!

These are just the basic rules; your trampoline came with a longer list that you should review. It's also a good idea to check your homeowner's liability coverage as some insurance companies are now charging higher premiums for those homes that have a trampoline.

So parents protect your children and do the responsible thing.I know it's sometimes hard to do the right things; we are spread out so thin with so much to do.But your kids need you out there supervising them on the trampoline, and it is fun to watch and laugh with them.Kids tend to act braver with their friends when a parent is not present. With a parent present they are less likely to try something like jumping off the roof onto the trampoline, or some other crazy thing. And your neighbor won't be worrying as she is watching out the window as the kids jump higher and higher as more kids join in.

When used properly a trampoline is a wonderful fun experience for all.Enjoy your family time and make some memories you will all look back on injury free.
