The Right Education

Ever wonder how those courtroom typists manage to write just as fast as people can speak? Well, they don't type in on a regular keyboard. Rather, they type in a special shorthand machine, so where a word that may take ten letters to type in English, it may only take one or two strokes in stenography. This is a learned skill, of course. You're not going to be able to sit there in a courthouse or in a conference room rental with your English-to-Stenography dictionary; you have to be able to type in shorthand at a very high rate of speed and accuracy. Once it's learned, however, it allows a stenographer to capture the spoken word at speeds of over 225 words per minute.

#1: A Real Interest in the Legal System

If you get bored out of your skull at those courtroom TV shows, then stenography really isn't the job for you. If you want to try stenography as a career, you need to have a serious passion for the legal system, a real interest. You don't need to be an expert, really, or else you may as well pass the bar and become a lawyer. But you should at least have a layman's interest in the proceedings of the court. Everything you need to know can be taught when you learn how to transcribe for the courts, but if it bores you know, it won't become more interesting in the future.
