Transferring or Pushing a Domain - What is it
, and How to Do it
Often, as a domain name owner, you may find the services of your current registrar unsatisfactory. Other times, you may have bought or sold a name and may need to transfer it to a different registrar. It is for these reasons that most registrars have made transferring a domain name a deceptively easy task. Nonetheless, to someone without any technical knowledge or experience using the internet, it can seem a little intimidating.
In a transfer, you effectively move the domain and all the services associated with it to another registrar. Transfer usually cost a bit less than a new registration - around $8-9 at most popular registrars such as GoDaddy. Transfer are a great way to changeregistrars without losing control of the domain, or to change ownership of the name.
The exact process for transferring a domain is different for different registrars. In most cases, you have to apply for a transfer to the gaining registrar. If you are moving a name in a generic top level extension (gTLD) such as .com, you will need a sercret code called the "authorization code" that only the domain owner can give you. In addition, you will have to get the name unlocked. Once you supply the authorization key to the gaining registrar, then the owner (you or someone else) will get an email confirming the transfer. At this point, the owner can cancel the move request. Once he approves it, it is simply a matter of waiting for 5-7 days to get control over the domain.
Keep in mind that a transfer is different from a push. When you "push" a name, you simply change ownership within the registrar itself. A push is usually instantaneous and doesn't cost anything (except in some registrars, namely 1and1). If you are selling or buying a name, it is better to open an account at the registrar where the domain is registered and simply push the name to the new owner's account. This way, not only do you save a few bucks, but also cut down on the time required to make the transfer.
