Transmission Repair: Getting To The Heart Of The Problem

Anyone who drives a car will likely run into problems under the hood eventually

. Transmission repair isn't something that every car owner is going to care about becoming an expert in, but knowing even a bit about the subject can potentially save you thousands of dollars when it comes to dropping your car off at the shop. Simply knowing what to listen for and what some of the most common problems are will give you a head forward compared to many other car owners and put you in an advantageous position when you go in to see a mechanic. Here is a brief overview of some of the problems you may face.

In most situations, transmission repair is going to be categorized in one of two ways. One, it will be aimed at fixing a car that isn't running smoothly. Rough idling, stalling, and jerky shifting from one gear to the next are all potential signs that something is wrong underneath the hood. The second category is when the car simply won't go at all. If you are careful about listening to the signs and sounds your car is giving you, you may be able to avoid this second category. This is worth doing, as the problem is usually much more expensive once it has reached this stage.

Fluid Levels

One of the simplest forms of transmission repair involves changing and replenishing the fluids. Most mechanics agree that a car owner should take stock of their transmission fluid levels at least a couple of times a year. If you take your car in for regular oil changes, you can always request that the mechanics monitor your other fluid levels at the same time and top them off if need be. This increases the price of an oil change, but it can certainly save you money in the long run. As long as you have a shop that you trust to treat you fairly, you won't have the nagging suspicions that they're taking advantage of you.

Leaks

If you're experiencing low fluid levels on a regular basis, it could be because you have a leak in the system. You can check for these leaks on your own, if you're the type of person who likes to do their own troubleshooting before taking the car into a mechanic. In most situations, the transmission fluid will have a red hue to it, making it fairly easy to spot the signs of leaking. Check at the base of the filler tube, check around the drainage hole, and look at the area in between the engine and the transmission. These are all common places to find signs of a leak. If you find any such signs, take your car into a mechanic and see what they can do about getting it patched up
