Travel Back In Time To Celebrate Christmas In The Late 1800s

This year, avoid the hectic pace of the holidays; return to the late 1800s to relax and celebrate Christmas

.

In both the gold rush areas of Nevada City and Grass Valley, California, December means decorating the towns for Christmas in Victorian and Cornish styles. Old fashioned festivities, reminiscent of Christmas past, are hosted by both cities honoring their historic roots. Both landmark historic districts of Grass Valley and Nevada City are closed to traffic as they are sent back in time. In celebration, locals wear the Victorian costumes of their gold rush and Cornish miner ancestors. Live entertainment is provided continuously by a number of kinds of people including Christmas carolers, cloggers, jugglers, bag pipe players, and other musicians.

A special part of the unique history of Grass valley is roving Christmas carolers. A group of miners in the early 1870s formed the Grass Valley Cornish Carol Choir. Cornish gold miners, who sang, while walking home at the end of a hard days work in the mines, came together in the choir. Their ancestors in Cornwall, England sang Cornish Christmas songs, just like the miners would sing.

All the local stores and restaurants stay open, and additional vendors line the streets selling handcrafted gifts and food. Residents mingle with visitors that come from California, and further, to take pleasure in these very special holiday fairs. The festivities are enjoyed by families as they shop for holiday gifts, enjoy the entertainment and food with friends and family, or take a ride in a carriage.

Victorian Christmas in Nevada City is celebrated early in December on Wednesday evenings, and in mid-December on Sunday afternoons. Grass Valley starts their Cornish Christmas celebration the Friday after Thanksgiving, continuing every Friday night through December 18th. Both celebrations are free to the public, though you are required to bring a jolly holiday spirit!

Grass Valley and Nevada City are situated in the wooded foothills of the northern Sierra Nevada at an elevation of 2,500 feet. You will find the Gold Rush cities an hours drive (60 miles) northeast of Sacramento on Interstate 80 and Highway 49 north. Take eastbound Highway 20 from the north valley and Marysville. Take interstate 80 from Reno and Tahoe to westbound scenic Highway 20.

If you want to spend the night, make hotel reservations early. Located in neighboring communities to Nevada City and Grass Valley are a dozen historic bed and breakfast inns and several comfortable hotels.

While you're in Nevada City or Grass Valley, you'll learn why western Nevada City is the perfect place to reside and play whether your real estate love is historic Victorians, waterfront homes, or privacy in the rolling hills.
