Rameshwaram is the city of beauty that attracts large number of tourists from all the parts of the world. Rameshwaram which is also referred as the Varanasi of the South is the foremost religious cities in Tamil Nadu. People come here from far flung places to this important centre of pilgrimage. Both Shaivites and Vaishnavaites come to Rameshwaram.

It is an age old belief that Lord Rama (who was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the Indian epic - The Ramayana) performed his thanks giving rituals in Rameshwaram to Lord Shiva after his victory over the demon king Ravana. Rameshwaram is situated on the eastern side of the Gulf of Mannar.

There are numerous places of tourist attractions in Rameshwaram, Tamil Nadu, some of them are given below:

Ramanathaswamy Temple: This temple is situated in the heart of the town and is well known historic temple. It is one of the most important temples in South India made up in Dravidian architecture. This splendid temple is known all over for its 1200 massive granite columns, which leaves one enthralled.

Agnitheertham: According to mythological belief Agnitheertam is a place where Lord Rama worshipped Lord Shiva to pardon him from the killing of Ravana. Agnitheertham, is situated at a short distance of 100 meters from the Ramanathaswamy Temple. People consider the water of this place to be scared and tourists throng here to take a holy dip.

Ramjharoka Temple: This temple is situated at the top most point on the island of Rameshwaram, Gandamadana Parvatham, and is at a distance of 5 km from Rameshwaram. The shrine here is assumed to preserve the imprint of Lord Rama's feet which are placed on a Chakra. This place is sacred and attracts large number of visitors.

Dhanushkodi: The place is named after Lord Rama's bow ('dhanush"), Dhanushkodi. Dhanushkodi is at a distance of 8 km from Rameshwaram. During the terrible storm in the year 1964 all but the Kothandaramaswamy Temple in Dhanushkodi were completely destroyed. This temple is the home to polished idols of Lord Rama, Sita (wife), Lakshmana (younger brother), Hanuman and Vibhishana (brother of Ravana).

Adam's Bridge: Adams Bridge is the chain of reefs, islets and sandbanks it almost connects Sri Lanka with India. It is alleged that these are the series of stepping stones which were used by Hanuman to follow Ravana, in his attempt to rescue Sita.
