History of Sun Life Stadium

If you have not been following the Miami Hurricanes, you probably don't know much about their history. For nearly seventy years, they played their home games in the Orange Bowl. After the 2007 season, they left the historic, but badly deteriorating downtown Miami stadium and headed north to play in what is now Sun Life Stadium. Originally called Joe Robbie Stadium after the owner of the Miami Dolphins who built the stadium in 1987, the stadium underwent several name changes in the 23 years since it was built. In 1990, Wayne Huizinga, a billionaire businessman, purchased 50% of the stadium and a few years later, brought Major League Baseball (The Florida Marlins) to South Florida. In 1996, naming rights to the stadium were sold to a large sportswear company who renamed the stadium Pro Player Stadium. In 2005, after hosting three Super Bowls, two World Series and a number of big events, Pro Player departed and the Stadium became known as Dolphin Stadium. That was short-lived as a new corporate sponsor, Sun Life purchased the rights to name the stadium. Today, Sun Life Stadium is the home stadium of the Miami Dolphins, Florida Marlins and the Miami Hurricane football team.
