Traveling and transporting your dog in the summer heat
Did you know?
Did you know?
A dog's body temperature is about 5 hotter than humans when at rest.
Humans sweat through their skin releasing heat all over their bodies while dogs only sweat from their mouths and feet making it much harder for them to cool off.
Dogs can suffer heat stroke which can be deadly.
Dogs pant to release heat and inhale to cool off so muzzling them (especially in the heat) can cause them to overheat and even die.
When the outside temperature is 75 , a car in the shade can easily reach 90 within 10 minutes, and a car in the sun can reach 110 and higher. These temperatures can kill your pet or cause serious health problems.
According to The Department of Geosciences, in the USA in 2010 alone over 23 human children died in hot cars. 471 children have died since 1998 from being left in hot cars. The number of dogs is so high that it would blow your mind. Many are not recorded or reported and many die at the Vets office while the tearful owners apologize for their ignorance.
If you plan to go out of town or only go across town with your dog, make sure you're prepared if you should break down or get stuck in traffic. Do you have extra water and a dog dish? Take a leash in case you must walk along dangerous roadways. Have a person available to come get you both if you need a ride back home? Find out beforehand if your tow service will allow your dog in their auto.
If you break down and it is hot, don't leave your dog in your auto thinking you can crack the windows, jog down to the service station, and get back so fast that your dog will be alright. You are not faster than the sun and you never know if you will be delayed longer than planned.
When temperatures are hot and you're planning on running errands, shopping, or getting gas, leave your dog at home. Air conditioners fail, cars shut off from overheating, and sometimes lines in stores cause longer than expected delays. These delays can cost your dog its life. I know someone who took their dog to the bank, went inside leaving the dog in the air conditioned car- the bank was robbed and the person detained so long the old car shut off leaving the dog almost dead. The police did not seem to think the dog's life as important as getting details on the robbery. That dog suffered brain damage and could no longer walk balanced.
If you're putting your pet on a plane, make sure to ask if the plane's cargo section is temperature controlled and properly pressurized for safe traveling of animals. Planes are often sitting for long periods of time on hot runways, and many animals have died while their owners sat in air conditioned seats above assuming their beloved babies are just as comfortable as they are. Consider all the stops the plane will make, the ground temperatures and air temperatures should not be too hot or too cold inside the pets holding area. Check all these details on all connecting flights as well.
You can also consider only flying your dog when it is mandatory, and not just for casual visits or fun. Some airlines work well with pet owners, and others I would never use. Be especially cautious with foreign plane carriers as they may not have guidelines or any repercussions for animal safety issues.
When you must travel or transport your dog in the heat, just be smart, plan ahead, remembering our dogs are sometimes more sensitive to extreme temperatures than we are. They are definitely more loyal to us than we are to one another. Enjoy your summer and your dog.
