Traveling with Your Bird Cages

If youre planning a road trip and you want or need to bring your feathered best friend

along for the ride, there is definitely a little prep work involved in this task. Birds may seem a lot easier to transport than dogs or cats because they already have bird cages to hangout in and they dont require you to make frequent pit stops, however, birds are much more fragile than other pets, so follow my precautions below. First make sure youve got a bird cage that will easily slide into your car. You may need to purchase a smaller, travel-sized one to fit into your car. The cage shouldnt be tilted or angled when its placed in your backseat. If this is the case, the cage is too large for your vehicle. After youve placed the cage into your car, be sure to buckle it in. You can purchase special harnesses for added protection if you dont feel your current system is secure enough. Do a few short trip trials with your bird before embarking on the actual trip. This way you can gage the reactions of your bird. You should be certain that your bird will feel comfortable for the road trip. If your bird appears overly stressed, you may want to cover the cage with a blanket. Never ever leave your bird alone in the car for a long period of time, especially during hot weather. Just like with any pet, birds are susceptible to heat stroke. If you own a rare bird, leaving it in the car also makes it susceptible to theft, so be aware of your surroundings and the people in the vicinity if you plan to run into the gas station quickly.
