Treat Her Like A Princess On Her Special Day

I am a wholehearted supporter of birthdays. I think that I will be celebrating them with enthusiasm even when I am past the point of actually wanting to admit my age. Not everyone feels the same way, of course, but if you know your girlfriend, wife, or daughter does, then nothing will mean more to her than you making the effort to treat her like a princess.

But what is the best way to go about doing this? Well, it will obviously depend much upon your relationship, her tastes, and her personality, but I can offer some general tips to help you approach the celebration.

Don't make your special girl wait to celebrate if her big day falls in the middle of the week. Sure, you may not be able to get the day off, but you can still pull a few sweet tricks. Bring her breakfast in bed or take her out to her favorite eatery first thing in the morning.

If she is free during the day but you cannot be with her, then send her to her favorite hair salon for fresh color, highlights, extensions, or some other hair treatment she's been dying for. Don't forget to pay for a manicure, too. You may even want to book an appointment for a massage for later in the afternoon so she'll finish up just as you're coming home from the office.

Weeknights are the perfect time to visit a restaurant that would be crowded if you waited until the weekend to go, but if you are planning to wait to go out until Friday or Saturday night, then be sure to make reservations. In fact, doing so no matter when you go lets her know that she is special enough to deserve such forethought.

Buy her a greeting card, for goodness' sake. My spouse tells me often that he does not think birthday cards (or Christmas cards, or Valentine's Day cards...) are important, as they are overpriced and get thrown out or put in a box at the back of the closet, never to be seen again.

Even if you agree, just do it! Whether it's romantic or comical, it shows that you took the time to choose something that reflects your thoughtfulness. And don't just sign it at the bottom--be sure to add your own message.

Surprises aren't always necessary on birthdays, though they can be nice, of course. So if you're in doubt about what to do for her, simply ask, and she will most likely be glad to share with you what she has in mind to properly celebrate her birthday. Don't forget to take pictures for memories to last in years to come!
