Treat Yourself To A China Visa And A Piece Of History
The Great Wall of China is beyond doubt one of the most wonderful and awe inspiring landmarks that exists anywhere in the world
. Partly this is down to the sheer intensity of the determination and human endeavour that went into its making. But more so still because it has ensured down through the ages, a truly magnificent structure of immense historical significance stretching quite literally over thousands of miles.
The Great Wall was erected more than two thousand years ago, under the Qin Dynasty and the Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi. It was intended as a fortification to defend the historical northern borders of the Empire against the attentions of the nomadic tribes of what is now northern China. A number of shorter walls had already begun to be built round about the 7th century BC and the Great Wall joined them as well as extending somewhat beyond. It was constructed from a mix of brick, tamped earth, stone, wood and a variety of other materials and was about 5,000 kilometres long.
During the Ming Dynasty of 1368-1644 the wall was to all intents rebuilt, and was elongated to around 6,400 kilometres. Several fortifications were added and guard stations and watch towers were established. In some places these were up to 25 feet in height, and were 15 to 30 feet wide at the base. This was the basis of the historic design with which we today are familiar, although an amount of reconstruction work has been undertaken during the last century. It has been reliably established that the Great Wall of China can indeed be seen from the Earths orbit, although claims that it can be seen from the moon are certainly erroneous.
Although it was in actual fact not terribly effective for its intended military purpose, the Great Wall of China today is perhaps unsurprisingly one of the worlds most well loved tourist attractions. In 1987 it was declared to be a World Heritage Site.
In certain parts it is in real danger of falling into irreversible decline. For instance, in Gansu province more than sixty kilometres of the wall face imminent disappearance as a result of erosion by sandstorms. Those sections of the wall that are mud based as opposed to stone are generally more vulnerable. Nonetheless at some sections of the wall close to Beijing thousands of international tourists visit each and every day.
