One way of doing this is to apply mild moisturizing lotion four or five times daily on the affected areas. It will also help to limit your infant's bath to two to three times a week, and to use a very mild soap that is free from perfumes or dyes.

Because the skin dryness creates a fragile skin that itches and is easily damage, it is also important that you keep the infant from scratching. Moreover, make sure that the affected areas do not come in frequent contact with clothing and bed clothes, as these substances will further irritate the affected areas. If, for instance, the skin does break with scratching, make sure to watch out for signs of infection. It is recommended that you apply antibiotic ointment as precaution against infection.

Also, if the itching persists, you can try applying a cold wet washcloth to the area to dampen the skin and then apply mild moisturizer. You can even ask your pediatrician if he can recommend an antihistamine to be taken at bedtime to help the infant to have a good night's sleep. Remember, though, that medications are given to deal with the symptoms only and not to cure the condition.
