Treating Stains And Spills On A Sofa Set

When you first buy a new sofa set there are lots of rules

. No one can eat on it or even near it and definitely no soda, wine, or other drinks on the couch! Then the rules begin to become a little more lax. Soon, you're going to find that you're taking dinners on the couch and before you know it you're going to have a stain on that beautiful Ashley furniture sofa. What do you do now?

Well, there are many ways to make sure that your sofa set stays looking new and clean for years to come, and no, that doesn't mean you have to wrap it in plastic like your grandmother's house.

First, check the tags. Not only will the tag on the furniture tell you what the material is but it can also give you a clue as to how to clean it. There are letters on the tag that can tell you what method to use. The letter "W" means you can spot clean the fabric with a water-based, mild detergent. "S" indicates that you can only clean it with a solvent. Solvent solutions are incredibly smelly and should only be used in a well-ventilated space. "SW" means you can use any of the previous two methods. The letter "X" is not a good letter to find on your furniture. It means that you can only vacuum the fabric. You should check the tags before you buy and if you have pets or small children stay away from sofa sets with the letter "X" on the tag!

If you are worried about the type of cleaner you are going to use on your couch or other upholstery, test it in an inconspicuous spot. Try the bottom hem of the sofa or the underside of one of the cushions. Be sure not to rub the cleaning solution too vigorously or the material may "pill" or roll into little balls like when you wash a sweater one too many times. When you are finished with the cleaning you'll want to take a clean sponge and wipe down the area with clean water. That is of course unless you have a leather sofa or are using solvent. Then using water is a no-no.

To keep stains from happening, vacuum your couch and its cushions often. This will make sure you catch spills and other debris before it becomes a set in stain.
