What is Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is also known as hyperactivity or attention deficit disorder (ADD). ADHD is a common condition that affects children and adolescents, while attention deficit disorder is more common in adults.

The National Institute of Mental Health estimates that 3% to 5% of children with ADHD. Some experts, however, say that ADHD can occur in 8% to 10% of children of school age. The experts also wonder whether children actually outgrow ADHD. What this means is that this disorder may be more common in adults than previously thought.

Children with ADHD often have trouble paying attention or concentrating. Can not seem to follow directions and are easily bored or frustrated with tasks. They also tend to move constantly and are impulsive, without stopping to think before acting. These behaviors are usually common in children. But they occur more frequently than usual and are more severe in children with Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The symptoms of ADHD in children are generally grouped into three categories: inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity. Adults with ADHD may have difficulty with time management, organizational skills, goal setting, and employment. They may also have problems with relationships, self esteem and addictions.

The exact cause of ADHD is unknown, but thought that due to several factors: genetics, chemical imbalances, differences in the brain, head trauma, exposure to toxic substances and / or problems in the mother's pregnancy.

The conventional treatment of ADHD has been mostly about treating patients with stimulants such as Concerta, Ritalin, and Dexedrine. The main problems with these drugs are side effects - abdominal pain, insomnia, poor appetite and anxiety to name a few. Some non-stimulant medication available and sometimes antidepressants are also used. Interestingly, long-term effects of these treatments are still unknown. Other treatments include behavioral therapy, counseling and specialized educational assistance.
