Cefotaxime 1 gm every 8 hourly or Ceftriaxone 1-2 gm every 24 hourly provides maximum coverage in most community-acquired infections in adults
. Oxacillin or nafcillin 2 gm every 4 hourly can be used if there are gram positive cocci on the smear. I/V Vancomycin can be used if methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is the culprit organism. Dose is 1 gm every 12 hourly.
