Thrush or yeast infection is a common infection seen in people of different ages

. It is seen in females in the form of thrush usually at an age of about 30 or 40. It is seen in males as male thrush and even in infants. It is most common in females but other two are also seen very commonly. The oral or mouth thrush can be seen in both males and females. It is also known as candidiasis or moniliasis.

It is a temporary Candida infection and is not uncommon in infants unless it lasts for more than a few weeks. Under normal conditions yeast grow in the mouth and throat cavity of humans. This is natural and very normal. This growth of yeast is controlled by our immune system. The immune system produces bacteria that prevent the growth of yeast beyond that which is acceptable by our body. If for some reason this production of bacteria or the action of bacteria is affected the yeast will start growing uncontrollably and if not countered this may become a serious, even fatal, disease.

Causes of mouth thrush includes reason that might upset our immune system includes extra load or stress, medications not supported by our system or any other. Weakened immune system due to aforementioned reasons or extreme illnesses such as cancer or HIV may also be few out of the many causes for mouth thrush. People having diabetes are more prone to having thrush. Heavy intake of antibiotics is seen to be the reason around 30% of the time. Anything that may affect or disturb the balance of fungus growth in mouth may lead to this painful infection. These include wearing dentures that dont fit properly and allows Candida to enter. Smoking may also be a cause of mouth thrush.

Major symptoms of thrush include white cottage cheese like appearances in your mouth. They may be present on your tongue, check, gums, roof of your mouth, tonsils or even in the inside of your esophagus. These white elevated spot like structure may sometimes bleed. Irritation, soreness and redness of the oral cavity is another symptom. Severe pain during swallowing together with feeling of being stuck in your chest or cavity can also be explained by the presence of excessive growth of yeast. Mouth thrush is usually chronic but if lasts for longer time may result in fever.

Mouth thrush needs special attention as soon as it is diagnosed. Since babies cannot be treated using medication care is taken about all feeding equipment that is specially sterilized. Toys that the child might take in the mouth should also be similarly sterilized. For elders though the cause is seen to be the easiest way to cure. Treatments of thrush include curing the cause. For example if the dentures or smoking seems to be the main reason, patient is made to change his dentures or quit smoking. In severe cases special medicines, injections, or even special oral treatments for thrush seem to be a good solution.
