Tree Transplanting Tips

Transplanting shrubs and trees is often done by many homeowners within the yard

. This may be required when some of the trees threaten to outgrow the available space in the garden, or they may have been thickly planted. As far as transplanting shrubs and trees are concerned size is a critical factor. Transplanting a bigger tree is more difficult than transplanting a smaller one. The longer you ignore a plant that has to be transplanted, the less likely that you will be able to save it. Try to visualize its full size first and then accordingly move it from that location.

Transplant at the appropriate time: You cannot take to tree transplanting at just about any time you want. During early spring, when humidity is high, it is the perfect time to move a tree. Try to avoid moving a tree with leaves as they will give up moisture through evaporation. So just before the leaves begin to bud out, transplanting is best done. Extra effort is required to transplant a full sized tree - the younger the better. Chances of survival decrease if the tree is not uprooted properly. Professionals need to be hired to move trees over 4 inches in diameter. Smaller plants are able to overcome the transplant shock much quickly and easily.

Preplanning helps: Lawn aeration tools are required to transplant a tree. A protective root ball is one important consideration. Depending on the diameter of the trunk of the tree, consider the depth of the root ball. The root ball depth should be around 8 inches for a 12 inch diameter root ball. A transplanting spade or a planting spade, mulch and water are the other lawn aeration tools and items required while transplanting a tree.

As far as lawn care is concerned a little bit of preplanning helps. Chances of successful transplanting are increased with proper root pruning. When a tree has to be transplanted you need to first severe the roots just below the drip line as this prompts re-growth of new roots. To fully root prune a tree it takes two to three seasons and sometimes even as much as six months.

To accommodate the roots without breaking or twisting the soil ball or the roots, dig the planting hole deep enough. The hole should be as deep as the root ball. A person with adequate knowledge on lawn care plays a good guide on the initial moisture level that needs to be maintained. In the case of a transplanted shrub or tree, fertilization should be avoided for a year at least.
