Trekking in Markha Track Ladakh

The western ranges of Himalaya, Ladak has been the location for adventure and cultural tourism since 1974 when Indian Government threw open this area for world tourism.

Ladakh has totally a different landscape, more akin to Tibetan plateau. Nearly 31000 tourists visit Ladakh region from May to September and generate 60% of the revenue. This region has number of trekking routes over high passes and snow covered peaks, the attraction for adventure tourism. But the Markha valley trek is one of the popular treks in leh.

Markha Valley trek is a long narrow stretch of 13 - 14 kms along the Markha River that originates from Nimaling plateau. The valley has a unique look with pompous mountain ranges of Stoke and Mashu on one side and Zanaskar range on the other side.It is a route to Kang Yatse Peak, 6400mts high.

The splendid view of snow clad King Yatse twin peaks bridged by snow covered vertical rock zooming towards blue sky give soothing touches to eyes and the mind of the adventurers. Nimaling - 4720mtrs high is an open grassy field for the base camp to Kang Yatse peak. In summer this area is inhabited by the shepherds with their young ones, who tend their livestock for grazing in this area.

Out of two Kang Yatse peaks, peak on right side is easily approachable for non - technical climber but requires mountaineering equipments to climb the peak 6200mts.

In a bid, to experience this trek and scaling of Kang Yatse peak in Markha valley, a group of British students of Marlborough College, London undertook this adventure trip.The group accompanied by mountain experts flew in from London to Leh with essential mountain equipments. In Leh they were instructed to avoid any brisk movement for 24hrs till they get themselves acclimatized to high altitude where oxygen is found less. On the next day the group visited Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa and Shankar Gompha and back to hotel. After this visit they were shifted to Stoke Palace camp site.

Here at Stoke Camp, the group spent their first night in tents. In the evening villagers of Stoke performed a traditional cultural dance. The Ladakhi damsels dressed in Goncha, colourful commerband and Cobra shaped headgear called perk studded with turquoise stones, danced on the tunes of trumpets and drum beats. The group had their dinner under lantern and battery lights in tents. Next day they set out for a trek. The first two kms of the trek passed through the hamlet over pebbled track till the first slow climb began. The group took Stokla route. The onward climb was steep with approximate elevation of 50 - 60 degree. The sky was overcast and the cool breeze started blowing till showers lashed mountain area. The group moved up the hill till they reached another camp site base Stokla (Stoke is the name of place, La means a pass in Ladakhi language). It was about 6 - 7hrs slow and study climb till Stokla base. The young students got exhausted with the steep climb and had panting breadth. At Stokla doctor conducted medical checkup of the team, to ensure that none of the trekker had high altitude sickness. It was another day for next stop at Rambak.
