Trend Of Market Disappear In Vietnam

A market is a place for economic trade, also serving to carry out cultural exchange

. Markets are held on certain days of the week, so that in a region, there always at least one market to meet the locals needs. Only big markets in highly commercial and crowded areas are opened daily. In Vietnam there are two types of market, defined by size: rural markets and urban markets. Rural markets meet the demand of the majority of the nation's people; it is a place where people can trade common essentials. The chosen location is usually a well-trafficked area, such as near a road or a river. In many regions, the markets are not inside the village but outside or even far awav on a field, so that bad habits in the market will not effect the age-old practices and customs of the villages.

The location of a market remains constant for generations. Reading historical records, one can see that during the Le Thanh Tong - Hong Duc reign, there was a regulation that any establishment of new markets or splitting of old markets must be approved by the Royal Court. Official markets have always been organized strictly by state laws. Markets that open spontaneously to meet the publics demand are called temporary markets - "cho coc. See photos

Historically, markets in Vietnam are like a tangled network that distribute vitals to the people, like veins pumping blood in a body. Vietnams traditional economy was based on operations of the market system, supporting buyers and sellers as well as the local administration with market duties. Culture has often developed around the market place. Folk songs often center around trade and the rnarket. In the following song describing a typical area, Kinh Bac in Bac Ninh province, the countryside market is distinguished from the urban markets:

Cho market sells flutes and stuf'fs

Bac Ninh offers golden rings to young girl

Dinh Bang sells pots and trays

Phu Luu fair grows more and more crowded

Before, Vietnam had few large towns - which often appeared to be big villages. Before French colonization, Thang Long, or old Hanoi, was called Ke Cho (Ke is an ancient word for an urban center). Old Hanoi was a place for convergence and trade villages. People settle into Old Hanoi, building communal houses and worship houses for their village tutelar gods as well as centers for trade.

Vendors selling the same product would form a row of stalls called Hang, which French colonizers later organized into streets. Thus came about streets like Hang Bac (silver stalls), where people sell silver and Hang Duong (sugar stalls) where people sell sweets and jams.

Before French colonization, market in Old Hanoi were still held in sprawling marketplaces and also scattered cho coc on the sidewalks of streets. In history books, these temporary sidewalk markets are described as very popular. Each passing mandarin or troops would send the crowded streets into turmoil, as sellers and buyers ran to the sides to clear the way. Sometimes they even had to jump into the road side lakes! The cho coc still exist in cities today.
